General FAQ
- Do I have/How do I get an ECC account?
- To determine if you already have an account at the ECC, visit the Helpdesk with your Student ID Card. If you do not have an account and you are enrolled in the College of Engineering or are taking an Engineering/Computer Science class, you may fill out an account application (available at the Helpdesk). PLEASE NOTE: Filling out an application does not guarantee that you will be given an account.
- How do I save a document as a PDF?
- To save a document as a PDF, simply print the document using the “CutePDF Writer” printer and specify a save location. (Note: Please be patient conversion may take some time to complete.)
- What is my Username and Password?
- Please visit the Helpdesk with your Student ID Card to find out your username and initial password.
- How much print quota do I get?

Undergraduates: 130 Pages Per Month
Graduates: 150 Pages Per Month
Visitors (Those not enrolled in the College of Engineering but taking a qualifying class): 50 Pages Per Month

- How much disk quota do I get?

Windows Disk Quota: 150MB
Linux Disk Quota: 80MB for Engineering students, 40MB for Visitors

- Do I have/How do I get an ECC email address/account?
- Anyone with an existing ECC account has and ECC email account.
- How do I access my ECC email account?
- Linux: Open a terminal window and type “alpine” or “mutt” and follow the onscreen directions.
Windows: You can check your ECC email account on windows by going to “Start — Programs — SSH — Secure Shell Client”; hit enter once the SSH Secure Shell loads and log into hostname u-10 and your ECC username. In the console window type either ‘alpine’ or ‘mutt’ and follow on screen directions to check your mail. Type ‘exit’ when done, and close SSH Secure Shell.
IMAP access is available to the ECC, please check the directions for your client.
Outlook 2007:- Create a new E-mail account (Tools -> Account Settings and select “New”):
- Select “Manually configure server settings or additional server types” and then click “Next”
- Select “Internet E-mail” and click “Next”
- Set the E-mail Address to username@ecc.unr.edu (Where username is your ECC login)
- Set the Account Type to “IMAP”
- Set the Incoming Mail Server to “mail.ecc.unr.edu”
- Set the Outgoing Mail Server to “smtp.unr.nevada.edu”
- Enter your ECC login in the User Name field
- Enter your ECC password (If you don’t want to enter your password every time select “Remember Password”)
- If all went well “Test Account Settings” should successfully be able to access your account
- Click “Next” and then click “Finish”
Entourage 2004 and 2008:
- Create a new E-mail Account (Entourage -> Account Settings and select “New”)
- Set the Account Type to “IMAP” and click on “OK”
- In the Account Name field enter “ECC”
- Enter your name in the provided field
- Set the E-mail Address to username@ecc.unr.edu (Where username is your ECC login)
- Enter your ECC login in the Account ID field
- Enter “mail.ecc.unr.edu” as the IMAP server
- Enter your ECC Password (If you don’t want to enter your password every time select “Save password in my Mac OS keychain”)
- Enter “smtp.unr.nevada.edu” as the SMTP server
- Click “OK”
Thunderbird 2.0:
- Create a new E-mail Account (File -> New -> Account)
- Select “E-mail Account” and click “Next”
- Enter your name in the provided field
- Enter username@ecc.unr.edu in the E-mail Address field (Where username is your ECC login)
- Select “IMAP”
- Enter “mail.ecc.unr.edu” as the Incoming Server
- Enter “smtp.unr.nevada.edu” as the Outgoing Server
- Click “Next” three times
- Click “Finish”
Mac Mail
- Create a new E-mail Account (Mail -> Preferences and click the “+” in the lower left of the window)
- Enter your name in the provided field
- Set the E-mail Address to username@ecc.unr.edu (Where username is your ECC login)
- Enter your ECC password in the provided field
- Uncheck “Automatically set up account” and click “Continue”
- Change Account Type to “IMAP”
- Set Incoming Mail Server to “mail.ecc.unr.edu” and click “Continue”
- Set Outgoing Mail Server to “smtp.unr.nevada.edu”
- Click “Use Authentication” and enter your NetID and NetID password in the appropriate fields
- Click “Continue” and then click “Create”
If at any time you are asked about a certificate, verify that it looks OK and then accept it.
The UNR SMTP server (smtp.unr.nevada.edu) is only available on campus. If you need access from off campus, you should contact your ISP about use of their SMTP server.
If you have any problems setting up IMAP, please visit the helpdesk.
- Linux: Open a terminal window and type “alpine” or “mutt” and follow the onscreen directions.
- I forgot my password, how do I reset it?/How do I change my password?
- Please visit the Helpdesk and ask one of our friendly assistants to change your password. ***YOU MUST PRESENT YOUR STUDENT ID CARD IN ORDER TO GET YOUR PASSWORD CHANGED AT THE HELPDESK.***If you have not forgotten your password but would like to change it, log in to one of the ECC machines and do the following:
Windows: Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete and then click on “Change Password.” Enter your old and new passwords, and press “ok”. A popup window will appear verifying that your password has been changed. Press “ok” on the popup, and wait to be returned to the options page. PLEASE NOTE: There is a significant delay before you are returned to the options page.
- Please visit the Helpdesk and ask one of our friendly assistants to change your password. ***YOU MUST PRESENT YOUR STUDENT ID CARD IN ORDER TO GET YOUR PASSWORD CHANGED AT THE HELPDESK.***If you have not forgotten your password but would like to change it, log in to one of the ECC machines and do the following:
- What is a secure password?
- To be secure, your password should contain:
- at least six (6) characters
- at least one (1) uppercase letter
- at least one (1) lowercase letter
- at least one (1) number
- at least one (1) symbol
And it must NOT contain any part of your full name or username.
- To be secure, your password should contain:
- How do I transfer files between an ECC machine and my home machine?
- Windows:
- Email your files as attachments; then download and save them from your email.
- Transfer your files via Thumb Drive.
- Transfer your files via CD.
Linux:
- Remotely login from an ECC Linux machine to your home machine (or from your home machine to an ECC Linux machine) and use the “scp” command to securly transfer your files. Note: Requires your home machine to have remote login capability. (For more information on SCP, type “man scp” at a Terminal prompt.)
- Email your files as attachments; then download and save them from your email.
- Transfer your files via Thumb Drive.
- Transfer your files via Floppy Disk.

- What is MSDN AA?
- The MSDN Academic Alliance (MSDN AA) is a service allowing UNR College of Engineering students to purchase certain software products from Microsoft at a reduced price.
- What products are available through MSDN AA?
- Does the ECC have Wireless Access?
- Yes. You should use your UNR NetID information to access the wireless network.
- Can I hook up my laptop to the ECC network?
- No. However, Wireless Access is available in the ECC. To use Wireless Access, your laptop must be equiped with a Wireless Network Card.
- Can I install programs on ECC machines?
- No. You may, however, run executable programs that do not attempt to install the program.
- How do I get on the Engineering Listserve?
